Biantan: No Minda team for PF League?

By Jack Biantan

IT IS a shame that Mindanao has the most number of recognized Football Associations (FA) under the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) and yet the second biggest island in the Philippine Archipelago is not represented in the Philippine Football League which is scheduled to open its first season in March. What are the 17-club members doing? The Yansons of Bacolod were reportedly interested in putting up a club for Davao City but that plan has so far fizzled out. Cagayan de Oro? No chance. There is even no proper football stadium here. Cebu is quite busy accommodating Dan Palami’s Global Football Club (FC) and according to the reports of SunStar Cebu Sports Editor Mike Limpag recently, the ball has started rolling in the Queen City of the South. They are renaming Global FC to Global Queen City FC and are now starting to sell club shares as high as P100,000 for a voting member and P5,000 as a non-voting member. There are five FA in Visayas: Negros Occidental FA, Negros Oriental FA, Cebu FA, Iloilo FA, and Leyte FA and yet there are already two sure clubs joining and one under negotiation. Iloilo FA is still trying to convince Stallions FC to make Iloilo as its home province after the Ernie Nierras-owned club has decided to make Biñan Laguna as its home province. If Iloilo gets to be represented in the Philippines Football League then that is an impressive 50 per cent representation of Visayas FA’s. It is now very clear that most of the 17 Mindanao FA’s created during the presidency of the late Jose Martinez were for political agenda of then the late president. Now that a club is needed to represent Mindanao, where are these FA’s. It is understandable that millions of pesos are needed to put up a football club. Clubs in the United Football League have bled so much. Now most of them have shifted to the Philippine Football League (PFL) hoping for return of investment and maybe latter some profits. There should be someone, somewhere here in Mindanao who is willing to put up professional football club and join the PFL. The Philippines is a basketball country but there is a market for football especially in Mindanao where talents are abound. The United States of America is not even a football country. There are a number of sports that compete against the beautiful game in the American sports market. But football (soccer) thrives and they have a strong professional league, the Major League Soccer. The creation of the PFL would help the sport grow in the country but how could it grow in Mindanao when no team can represent the Land of Promise in the league.
