Opening Week for HS Boys Soccer

Weather and facilities permitting, this is the opening week for high school boys soccer in Washington. Many, many teams will be heading outside for the first time this weekend after spending the majority of the past couple weeks training indoors.

Thursday marks the start of the action in the greater-Spokane area for the four 3A schools in the GSL get together at Dwight Merkel for a jamboree. Richland will host a similar jamboree Thursday. On Friday and Saturday, nearly everyone else will hit the turf pitches - those cleared of snow - around the region.

The real issue, though, will be the schools that have natural grass fields. The amount of remaining snow - and continued precipitation - could create ongoing issues this season.  One coach told INWsn he didn't think they would be playing on their home field until after Spring Break (typically first week of April). That could be several weeks into league seasons for some schools.

The Mid-Columbia Conference kicks off their official league season on Tuesday, March 14 and the Columbia Basin Big Nine kicks off three days later on Friday, March 17. The Greater Spokane League, meanwhile, gets things underway on March 22.
